Part 2
He took off his shirt and tossed it on the coffee table as the pain pill began to work it's magic. Harm began to drift back to sleep on the sofa.
The soft knocking did not disturb Harm's drug assisted nap nor did the sound of a key unlocking the door. Mac had just finished her shower and was dressing in Harm's shorts and shirt when she heard the sound at the door.
Picking up a wine bottle from the kitchen, Mac eased herself towards Harm and whispered "Harm wake up!" His glazed eyes attempted to focus as he watched Mac move closer to the door as it opened slowly.
"Renee!" Mac lowered the bottle as Renee entered the apartment looking rather surprised.
"Colonel McKenzie?" She scanned the Marine dressed in her boyfriend's clothes holding a wine bottle. Her mouth dropped open as she saw Harm's scantly clad body on the sofa looking somewhat intoxicated.
Harm focused enough to realize Renee and Mac where standing at the doorway while Mac was holding a wine bottle. This all seemed confusing.
"I just thought I would surprise Harm for the weekend...But I guess I'm the one who got the surprise." Renee said caustically.
Harm stood up quickly only to fall backward to the sofa. Mac rushed over to steady him. "This isn't what you think, Renee. Harm and I.." Mac stuttered.
Harm swallowed painfully and tried to explain only to croak out "Renee.." unable to speak louder than a whisper.
Renee tossed Harm his keys, "Maybe I'm not really that surprised." She turned and walked out slamming the door.
Harm just dropped his head back against the sofa and closed his eyes.
"Harm, I'm sorry...I'll call her and explain. I guess it did look pretty bad." Mac still held the wine bottle and looked remorseful.
Harm opened his eyes and examined her face and then their appearance. A big smile broke across his face. He found the pen and pad.
'I GUESS WE DO LOOK PRETTY GUILTY. I'LL GET HARRIET TO EXPLAIN. I DON'T THINK RENEE WILL LISTEN TO YOU'
Mac smiled back, "Yea, I think she likes Harriet better than me anyway."
'BY THE WAY, WHAT WERE YOU PLANNING ON DOING WITH THAT WINE BOTTLE? INVITING OUR INTRUDER IN FOR A DRINK?'
"Funny...Harm do you think she will understand?"
'I'M NOT GOING TO WORRY ABOUT THAT TONIGHT. I'M GOING TO BED. GOODNIGHT MY BODYGUARD.' He smiled and headed to the bedroom.

The next morning Harm agreed to eat some soft scrambled eggs Mac had prepared and then insisted she go home to get some rest before work on Monday.
Mac called Harriet and explained the awkward predicament. Harriet agreed to call Renee since Harm was unable to talk above a whisper.

Mac entered her apartment and became concerned when Jingo didn't immediately appear. Her neighbor had agreed to care for him while she was not home, but Jingo should have been home. She then noticed Mic's jacket laid across a chair. Shortly after keys rattled in her door, and Mic appeared with Jingo on his leash.
"I got back last night and called. All I got was your answer machine, and I got kinda worried so I came over." Mic hugged and kissed her warmly. "Where have you been, luv?" He continued to hold her in his embrace.
Mac fought her feelings of guilt after all she hadn't done anything wrong. She had just stayed with a sick friend who just happened to make Mic extremely jealous.
"A friend at work had a tonsillectomy, and I helped out." Mac hoped this would end the conversation.
"Who was she? I understand that sort of surgery when you're an adult can be quite painful." Mic seemed truly sympathetic.
"It was Harm...How was your trip?" Mac replied matter of factly.
Mac felt Mic stiffen, "Sarah, doesn't Harm have a girlfriend that could take care of him?" His voice was tense.
"Mic, Renee was out of town, and this came up rather suddenly. You know we're just friends." Mac attempted to explain.
"I know that you say you're just friends, but hell Sarah, if you're not chasing after him in Russia, your playing nursemaid."
"Mic, nothing is going on between Harm and I."
"Why then Sarah, do I feel like if something ever happened to me you'd grieve a little while and then move on, but if something ever happened to Harm you'd never get over it?"
**********
Harriet had convinced Renee that Harm's surgery had left him feeling really ill, and he couldn't stay alone.
Renee sat stiffly next to Harm on the sofa. His pain had lessened enabling him to whisper.
"Harm, why didn't you tell me about this?" Renee looked sadly.
"You were already gone, and I didn't want you to miss work. I know this project is important to your career." His whispered and sipped on cold water. "Nothing happened Renee.. I just didn't realize how I would feel after the surgery. Mac just helped me out."
"Harm you didn't want me to miss work, but how many days did Sarah miss of work to stay with you?" She avoided looking at him. "Harm, I've been offered a full time contract to continue this project I've been producing. I'll have to move to California."
"That's great Renee, I'm happy for you!" Harm whispered and reached over and pulled her into an embrace.
Tears collected in her eyes, "You could ask me to stay," she whispered into his shoulder.
"Renee, I can't.." He whispered as he held her.
"I figured you wouldn't... I guess I always hoped that maybe you needed me just a little bit." She pulled away and looked into his eyes. "You've never needed me and never will. Sarah's the only one you've ever needed."

A week later
JAG headquarters
"How are you feeling?" Harm looked up from the pile of paper work on his desk to see Mac leaning against his office door.
"Much better until I found all of this paperwork on my desk." He chuckled.
"Thanks for the CD. I love Patsy Cline."
"Thanks for putting up with me.. I would have sent flowers, but I didn't want to cause trouble...well a CD will last longer." He gave her a big smile.
"Your right I'll enjoy this CD for a long time. Mic and I are giving each other some space right now."
"I'm sorry, Sarah" he looked sadly. She knew he hated to see her hurt even if he didn't like Mic.
"Maybe it's not such a bad thing." She added and smiled.
"Yea, Renee's gone...She had a great career opportunity in California." He said softly.
"I'm sorry."
"Are you?" His eyes held hers.
"What are you doing for lunch, Sailor?"
Harm grimaced.
"We can go eat ice cream." She offered with a smile.
"Is 1200 ok with you, Marine?"
"Sounds good."
