Classification: PG-13
Category: Harm and Mac angst/romance
Summary: How much do Harm and Mac need each other? You may want to read "Speechless" but it is not necessary. This could stand on its own. This occurs during season 6 and Mic and Renee have departed.

Thanks to Marianne, who beta read and made numerous tedious corrections.

"Why then Sarah, do I feel like if something ever happened to me you'd grieve a little while and then move on, but if something ever happened to Harm you'd never get over it?"

"You never needed me, you never will. Sarah is the only one you've ever needed."

JAG Courtroom

"So you think you can win this one Colonel? We'll see." Harm proposed the challenge as he and Mac entered the courtroom. Harm was prosecuting while Mac was defending Master Chief Marvin Wright accused of disobeying a direct order of the officer on duty, a Lt. jg Andrew Berry.

"Loser agrees to wash and wax the winner's car." Mac tossed out the stakes of their latest contest.

"I hope you're up to it. I want my SUV hand waxed." He shot back with a smile.

"Just think you'll finally get to drive my car, while you park it so you can wash it. And not only will it be hand waxed, but I want it buffed." Her eyebrow raised and a smile crossing her face.

Their banter made Lt. Bud Roberts smile as he followed the two officers into the courtroom. Ever since the Commander had his tonsils removed last winter, the Colonel McKenzie and Commander Rabb seemed to enjoy each other at work and outside of work.

Both lawyers used their most aggressive skills to prove his or her side of case. Anyone who watched would find it hard to believe that the two lawyers could be at each other's throats one minute and splitting a pizza and laughing at some shared story the next. Harriet Roberts had even accused them of finishing each other's sentences.

Throughout the trial Master Chief Wright had become more and more irate. Mac had to ask him to sit down twice as he responded to testimony that implied he was performing his job less than satisfactorily. He muttered curses under his Breath. "Chief, you will maintain a professional composure, or Admiral Morris will have you restrained." Mac threatened her agitated defendant.

Harm called Lt. Berry to the stand and began to question him concerning the Master Chief's performance. Lt. Berry responded, "The Chief tended to lose his temper. I asked him to stand down after I found him yelling and threatening one of the petty officers."

"What was his response to your order Lt.?" Harm paced near the witness stand.

"He told me to kiss his ass." The Lt. glared at the Chief.

Before Mac realized it, Chief Wright had jumped up from his seat and yelled, "You lying SOB, I'll show you!" then drew an automatic pistol from inside his jacket aiming it at Lt. Berry. Mac threw herself towards him attempting to knock the pistol away as it fired sending the chief to the floor.

Harm turned towards the angry defendant in time to see his gun flash.

The sharp pain he felt next took his breath away as his knees gave way and his surroundings faded into blackness.

Marine guards appeared and subdued the irate chief immediately.

Mac stood and regained her balance. "Oh no, no.."

She ran to Harm as he lay limp on the floor and dropped on her knees cradling his upper torso in her lap. All she could see as blood from the chest wound. Admiral Morris held a small white towel over the wound and began yelling orders to get an ambulance.

Bud removed his jacket with trembling hands and covered his friend, "Someone go get Admiral Chegwidden. Hurry."

Totally unaware of the activity around her, Mac stoked his pale cool face and rocked back and forth. "Harm, please hang on.. Please" Tears poured from her face dropping on his as she held him even tighter.

"No.. Not like Dalton.. Please God no."

Admiral Chegwidden's hands gently pulled Mac's away as a paramedic attempted to assess the wound. "Mac, let go, Mac you've got to let go so they can help Harm." His voice gentle but firm.

She allowed the Admiral to move Harm from her lap and pull her away so the paramedics could begin treatment. They quickly assessed his vital signs, started an IV, applied oxygen via a facemask and then gently moved him to a stretcher so the waiting Medevac helicopter could transport him to Bethesda. One of the paramedics informed the officers that someone could ride with them. Mac hurried behind the stretcher and joined the crew sitting close to Harm. As the Helo took off she reached for his cool hand and held it and spoke softly, "I'm sorry Harm...I'm so sorry."

The paramedics where busy assessing Harm's condition and communicating with the hospital and pilot of the Helo. "BP is 60/40 and dropping, pulse 120, respirations 36 and Labored.. No breath sounds on right lower chest. IV of Lactated Ringer's infusing wide open. Better hurry, we are losing him."
