PART 8

The day ended with a stop in the French Quarter for hot sugar powdered beignets and rich dark roast Community coffee spiked with hot milk while Janet happily drank chocolate milk. They sat on the outside portico and watched the various street entertainers. A clown making balloon animals walked over and handed Janet a poodle. Couples climbed into the carriages that lined the street to take tours of the quarters while artists made sketches of celebrities and tourists for a fee. John appeared to be relaxed and enjoying himself. He turned and grinned at Christine and took his thumb to wipe away some powdered sugar that covered her nose. Her heart beat wildly as his eyes held hers for a moment.

"Mom, lets go see the dancers in front of the cathedral?" Janet interrupted.

"Let's go." Christine smiled as she took John's hand and he made no attempt to pull away.

They walked for an hour or so entertained by the tap dancers, window- shopping and people watching. Finding an empty bench along the well lit walkway that followed the Mississippi River they found an empty bench and sat to watch the barges slowly make their way towards the Gulf of Mexico.

Christine caught John totally focused on a large ship that slowly navigated down river. "Penny for your thoughts."

"What?" He replied blankly.

"You seem really fascinated by that old ship."

"I've been on one before." He remembered. "Everything seems to be just out of my reach." He added softly.

Janet was happily pretending to walk her balloon poodle up and down a brick walk that ran along the walkway and was not paying them much attention.

John turned to face Christine when he felt her watching him. Her eyes held him and her lips looked ready to be kissed. He his hand caressed her cheek. 'You know they light up that bridge on New Years with the word Eternity?' The words echoed in his thoughts.

"Eternity?" Christine repeated.

John looked at her in confusion and withdrew, "This isn't right."

Christine's heart sank. "We need to go."

John said very little on the return trip. He could remember a pair of large brown eyes. If only he could put a face, a name with the image that haunted him.

The next day Christine received a call from the Port Authority, "Dr. Tan, I have some information that you may find helpful. One of my men recalled seeing someone who looked like your man wandering around the North Star a ship that came down from Memphis around the time you said he showed up."

Christine hesitated and then picked up the phone and dialed the Memphis police.

"Colonel Mackenzie you have a call from the Memphis police." Tiner approached Mac as she entered the department.

She picked up the phone, "Colonel Mackenzie, I was given your number in regards to a missing person's report." Mac's heart rate speeded up as she wrote down the information.

"Tiner please book me a flight into New Orleans ASAP, and I need to see the Admiral."
