PART 6
John threw the knife down, grabbed the man by the shirt, and pulled him to his feet. He locked the man's arms behind his back and pushed him against the car as people began to gather around the scene. Security ran up with guns pointed at the pair.
"Put your hands behind your head and turn around slowly." One of the security guards instructed. John held the man for a few more seconds and then placed his own hands behind his head and moved away so the assailant could stand.
Christine picked Janet up and quickly explained. "That man attacked me and my daughter. John, this man stopped him. He's with me."
The security guard nodded. "The police are coming. Let's just stay together until they come. Do you need an ambulance?"
"No, I am a doctor. Could you get me some ice?" Christine gently stroked Janet's bruised face and quickly assessed her for more injuries.
John was quiet all the way back to the State Hospital. Janet had fallen asleep in the back seat after Christine had given her a mild sedative.
"John, thank you. That man could have." She stopped short and swallowed deeply as she kept her eyes on the road.
"I'm sorry Christine. I should have gone with you. None of this would have happened." John said remorsefully.
Christine looked bewildered, "John this wasn't your fault. If you had not come with us to the fair, we would have come alone. I'm glad you were with us." She reached over and squeezed his hand.
They pulled into the parking lot while John got out. He walked around to Christine's side of the car and knelt down. "Thanks for getting me out of here for a while. Let me know how Janet is doing. I hope I didn't frighten her."
"She's tough, but I'll call and let you know. John, I'm going to try to find some information about you." Christine reached and stroked his face, "Whoever you are, you are a special man." Her deep brown eyes looked so vulnerable and gentle.
For a moment, she thought he was going to kiss her, but he had one of those looks of pain that flashed across his handsome face and he backed away.
That night John had nightmares of shooting a woman who was singing to a group of children and a tall black man who was threatening a little black girl." John awoke sweating and short of breath. Maybe he was a killer. He could have so easily slit that man's throat.
John paced the room unable to sit still as he and Jeff met for an emergency session the next day. After the incident the evening before John seemed irritable and refused to eat. The charge nurse became concerned and called Jeff.
"I'm having all these feelings, but no memories to explain what they mean. I'm afraid of the person I may be. I know that I have killed before more than once." John ran his hand through his hair nervously.
"You are remembering?" Jeff asked.
"Just flashes and feelings." John answered.
"You don't have any facts to validate what your actions have been in the past." Jeff tried to calm John.
"I know that I have killed!" John said more loudly than he intended.
"John, take some deep breaths and sit down." Jeff tone was controlled.
John complied and placed his face in his hands.
"Christine told me that you seemed to have had a good time at the fair until the attack. Tell about that." Jeff redirected the focus of the conversation.
"Christine has a great kid. I rode all the rides with Janet after her mom turned green. Motion and speed doesn't seem to bother me." He chuckled.
"Maybe you're a race car driver or something?" Jeff smiled.
"That doesn't feel right." John thought a moment. "Christine was attacked. I should have made sure she and Janet were safe." He added irritably.
"You're having feelings for Christine." Jeff voiced a hunch.
"She has incredible eyes. I look into them and feel myself getting lost all over again." John said distractedly.
"Is your relationship evolving?" Jeff quizzed.
John seemed a little surprised by the question. "I don't know."
"Christine is planning on coming back this weekend." Jeff replied. "Have you thought about your feelings?"
"No." He answered softly.
