Part 4
I tried to call out to Harm as I drove to the hospital. 'You can't leave me now Harm. Do you understand? I promise to listen!' I pleaded as I made my way to the ICU waiting area.
The doctor was talking with Trish, Frank and Sergei when I arrived. At the moment, I didn't look like such a fearless devil dog Marine.
"I'm holding you to your promise Marine."
"Thank God, don't scare me like that." I responded.
Trish embraced me and wiped away the remains of tears from her eyes. "Harm developed an irregular heart beat and for a moment we lost him. I'm sorry we scared you."
"But he's holding his own now." Frank added and gave Sergei a fatherly pat on the shoulder.
"Let me get you some hot tea Mrs. Trish." Sergei offered and then looked to Frank and I.
"That would be nice Sergei." Trish leaned over and kissed his cheek. "You have his smile." She added, turned, and walked towards the windows probably to pull herself back together.
"None for me."
"Or me." Frank and I respond.
Frank's voice became low. "She will be alright. She just needs a few minutes alone. She's a strong person, but even the strongest can only take so much."
"Both of you are remarkable." I can't help expressing my respect for this mixed family. No matter what, Harm's family managed to pull together and support one another, so different from my family story.
Frank reached for my hand and led me over to the couch, "How are you doing my dear? Harm told us about that terrible man who left you at the altar."
I must add this to my list of things to talk about with Harmon Rabb Junior I thought as I bit my tongue. "I'm fine. Thank you for asking." I plastered a tight smile on my face.
"Personally, I believe that Harm didn't like the guy because he has a thing for you." Frank chuckled and my face felt hot as a wave of embarrassment caught me by surprise.
"Oh Frank!" Trish had overheard the conversation and came to my rescue. "Men, you have to forgive them. I believe they will say just about anything that pops in their heads. I guess that's why God made women. To teach men that their feet belong in shoes and not in their mouths." I knew I would like this woman.
"That's alright Mrs. Burnett. Remember, I've been around your son for nearly six years." I responded winning a wink from Trish.
"Call me Trish, please. I feel like I have know you the entire six years." She sat next to me and grinned a smile that was so familiar to me. I thought Harm looked so much like his father, but the resemblance to his mother was definitely there.
"Trish, I will find out who did this to Harm. I promise." I watched her smile fade.
"Be careful Sarah. Harm would never forgive himself if something happened to you because of this." Her voice was unwavering. She called me Sarah and not Mac.
Sergei returned with two cups of hot beverage. He carefully handed one to Trish who smiled gratefully. Her reaction pleased him. I stayed a few more minutes watching the dynamics between what had been strangers just hours ago. Frank had asked Sergei about his responsibilities in the Russian military while Trish listened attentively and nodded appropriately. He was Harm's brother, and they loved Harm so they now loved Sergei. It was as simple as that. I want them to love me too. Trish turned and picked up my hand and squeezed it as if she had known what I was thinking. I was loved too.
I remembered the fabric sample I found and made excuses to leave so I
could hurry it to the forensic lab. What now? Harm told me others may
be in jeopardy.
But who was he talking about. I headed down the beltway back to JAG
HQ after dropping the evidence by the lab.
"Just drive Marine."
"Don't do that! I nearly wet my pants."
"A Marine who wets her pants. That doesn't need to be 'leaked' out or the Marines could lose their kick ass reputation." Harm deadpanned as he stretched in the passenger seat next to me.
"Funny." I went with the flow. So I'm crazy. Better than devastated
right?
"What do you think you were doing back there at the hospital. You
scared your family." I fussed, only to have him ignore the last
comment.
"I've been thinking." He was serious now. "Whoever did this took great pains to make it look like a robbery, but was anything missing or added?"
"Back to your apartment?" I deducted.
"I'm glad you finally decided to listen to me."
I turned off the next exit and drove back to his apartment. I was about to make a comment to him, but he was playing 'now you see me, now you don't'. Where did he go? My cell phone rang and the lab informed me of the results. The stain was blood, AB negative somewhat rare. I called CAI headquarters and had Webb look up any suspects with that blood type.
When I opened the door he was waiting for me pacing around his
apartment.
"Damn! What a mess."
"I'll help you put everything back in order." I offered rather generously.
He looked at me incredulously, "Why don't you work on your office first."
"Don't be such a smart ass."
"Well I've moved up in you esteem. At least now I'm smart and not just an ass. And the office remark, the truth hurts doesn't it Ninja girl!"
"Don't get me started. I'm going to ignore that statement for now and add it to my list to discuss with you later."
"A list? So you have a list. Maybe that's what I should have done on the Guatalcanal, presented you with a list."
"The list is growing longer." I warned.
"I may say stupid things, but at least I can let them go."
"Do you want to find out who stabbed you are do you want to argue?" I snapped impatiently.
"Ouch! You know there are other ways of hurting people besides with a knife."
"We're pretty good at doing that aren't we, I'm sorry." My old hurts resurfaced and I counter attacked as usual. This is something I must change. Words can come back and haunt you. Our argument before he left for his quals on the eve of my wedding was a prime example.
"You're right. Let's get on with this." His voice softened.
I moved into the bedroom and start to pick up items thrown around. "Looks like I've discovered a secret about you Squid." The black lacy panties lay on top of what looked like the contents of an emptied drawer.
Harm smiled mischievously. "Not my size. Just a memento from my ex- film director turned funeral director girlfriend."
"I don't want to even create that image in my mind!"
"Well, how do you think I felt when Crocodile Dundee moved in with you!"
"You were jealous!"
"Damn right."
"You must be a figment of my imagination. The real Harmon Rabb would never confess to being jealous of Mic Brumby."
"And you weren't jealous of Renee?"
"Maybe a little, but I didn't have anything to be jealous about." I smiled evilly.
"Well she was jealous of your boo..."
"My what?"
"Your boots, your shoe collection."
"You are lying."
"Do you want to turn those panties in as evidence?"
"Kinky." I smirked.
"You have a dirty mind."
"So report me Squid."
"To the thought patrol?"
"And just who would that be?"
"Me and Bud." He chuckled. Our interactions were definitely deteriorating.
We went through Harm's apartment with a fine tooth comb and nothing turned up missing.
I picked up what had been the contents of his refrigerator and dropped the now soured food into a garbage bag and swept up pieces of pasta and rice that was emptied from canisters. "Has Sergei made you any bear stew?"
"It's not in season. However, you would be proud of me. I did cook him a steak."
"Dead cow? I'm impressed. When are you going to cook for me?"
"What would you like Madam?"
"Nothing meatless or begins with the word vegetarian." I bent over to pick up the pile of trash and noticed some seeds. "Having trouble with your smoking habit again?" I held up the sunflower seed.
"No, what is that?"
"Sunflower seed. My uncle used them to help curve his smoking cravings when he was giving up the habit."
"Mac, I know who did this."
