PART 1

The scene was becoming somewhat predictable for those who worked at the old large red brick structure. Two officers sitting under the shade of the large hardwoods that graced the landscape. She wore the Marine green and insignias of a Lt. Colonel, and he the navy with the stripes of a Commander. Lunchtime at JAG headquarters meant you could always locate them together whenever they were in town. Sometimes they would be held captive in a deep conversation while like today the sound of laughter floated from the table.

They had slowly eased into a comfortable close relationship that by all accounts could be compared to a couple who had been married many years minus the rings and the sexual intimacy. An unspoken agreement at some point in time that they belonged with each other was validated by consistent refusals of invitations by potential suitors from both parties. Those who worked closely with the couple quickly admonished a suggestion of fraternization. The balance of this relationship was carefully maintained by all that knew their past...

A small box beautifully wrapped in shimmering paper and ribbon sat on the concrete table in front of Sarah 'Mac' Mackenzie. "Now what is this for? I know you realize it's not my birthday." Her eyes sparkled as she sized up the package.

"It's just a small way of saying thank you." He replied a little awkwardly. "Go ahead and open it."

She eyed him suspiciously, "You aren't planning on trying to dump the Jefferson appeal on me?"

He grabbed his heart defensively, "Who me, well maybe, but that's another matter." His playful smile faded to a serious one, "It's been a year since you rescued me."

Her puzzled look transformed one into realization, " It has been a year but,I think this needs to go to Commander Lockless and his crew."

"Mac, I would have never been rescued if you wouldn't have found me." His blue eyes held hers. "It's not much, but I thought of you when I saw it." He smiled.

She started to open the box, "Too small to be shoes." They both chuckled.

"I like this kind of surprise." She added as she removed the last of the ribbon.

"Yea I know. You also like dead animal, chocolate covered pecans and anything fried." He teased. She responded with a look of mock dismay.

"You are just jealous because you can't handle the good stuff."

"You have that right." He said aloud. 'In more ways than one.' He thought. "Just open it."

She lifted the lid and pulled away the white tissue paper. Gently she picked up a delicate crystal wind chime. "This is exquisite." She examined the sea gulls strung with almost invisible line. Holding it up the light breeze stirred the glass shapes creating a musical tingling sound.

"You like?" He watched her fascination.

"Very much. I know just where to hang it."

"If there is no breeze it also acts as a sun catcher." Harm pointed to the dancing colored lights that reflected on the table.

She carefully replaced it into the box and reached over to squeeze his hand. "You couldn't have found anything I would have liked any better! You know me so well." The tone of her voice reached deeply into his soul. His hand curled around hers and held it. It was becoming harder and harder to keep what professional relationship they had intact.
