PART 9
The warm front ushered in a cold front and snow began to fall in big fluffy flakes as Mac drove back to Washington. She felt like her heart had been ripped from her chest. How could he be so cruel? She replayed the scene repeatedly as she drove. Mentally she began to dissect the scenario. She pictured him chopping the wood. He was so intent in his task. A visual image formed of him leaning awkwardly on some sort of building as he lifted the axe. He almost fell because he lost his balance when she startled him as she approached. Sniffing away her tears, she pulled the car over to the side of the road. She then remembered how he immediately sat down of the block. He kicked something out of the way. It was a stick or a cane?
Pulling her cell phone from out of her purse, she dialed, "Phillip, this is Sarah. I need to know something. I know I may be asking you to break client patient confidentiality..."
Harm sat in the living room watching the fire dance and listening to the crackle of the burning wood. Tomorrow he needed to finalize his separation from the Navy. He cringed at the thought of receiving disability benefits Private practice wouldn't be so bad, he already had the beginnings of a law practice in Bealsville. He rcached down and rubbed his right thigh. The extremity ached from the earlier exertion.
Pulling up his pant leg, he then jerked the artificial limb away. Propping the limb against the couch, he placed his residual limb up on a pillow on an ottoman. Hoping to drift to sleep, he leaned back into the couch and closed his eyes. Maybe he would dream of happier times when he and Mac sat under the oak tree at JAG.
"You know you're not very good at hiding things from me." He thought that maybe he was dreaming. His eyes fluttered open to see Mac standing at the door.
He quickly moved his right leg down behind the ottoman. "Was this why you didn't call me?" Tears ran down her face.
"I don't need your pity, Mac." Harm avoided looking at her.
She walked over and sat next to him, "I would never pity you Harm."I think you've done that enough for both of us. I am angry as hell. I am hurt that you didn't let me know. But I do not feel one bit sorry for you." She faced him with her arms folded stubbornly across her chest..
"How did you find out?" He asked without looking at her.
"I'm a JAG remember. I have keen observation skills. I watched you chop wood. You were a little off balanced." She replied matter of factly. "But you still look hot." She smiled with a hint of seduction
"I was hot. It's been a while since I worked up a good sweat." Harm replied totally missing her meaning.
"Listen to me Harm. You are hot! I find you to be the most attractive man I have ever been around! Do you realize that I wake up at nights having x-rated dreams about you."
"Now you can have nightmares." Harm turned away dejectedly.
"You are so damned clueless sometimes. This doesn't change how I see you and how I feel about you! Do you want to know what you missed that night by not coming to the Parker House. I was a Marine on a mission! I had a dress on that would have ended our platonic relationship forever!" She sounded totally exasperated.
Harm looked at her, really looked at her for the first time. She didn't have any signs of sympathy or pity in her eyes. She just had that stubborn jarhead look that made him crazy.
She glared at him, ready to pounce if he made another lame excuse for not being with her. They sat in silence waiting for one of them to break the standoff.
Harm's expression transformed from distant and cautious to soft and hopeful. "What color was the dress?"
Her shocked expression melted into another seductive smile, "It's in the car."
His eyebrows raised.
"Can I claim that rain check now?" She leaned over and placed a soft kiss on his lips.
He reached up and pulled her firmly to him kissing her with all of his heart and soul.
The end...
by the way Harm never saw the dress.
"Heart and soul
I fell in love with you
Heart and soul,
the way a fool would do,
Madly, because you held me tight
and stole a kiss in the night.
Heart and soul,
I begged to be adored
Lost control and tumbled overboard
Gladly, that magic night
We kissed,
There in the moon mist."
