Part 13
The next few days were a blur, as Harm didn't seem to become any better or any worse. Mac had requested a leave to be able to remain with Harm's family who maintained a continuous watch. Finally, at the end of the week and several blood transfusions later, Harm seemed began to show signs of improvement. Trish, Mac and Sergei were allowed short visits in the isolation room.
"Hey brother, I am angry with you." Sergei sat next to Harm's bed. The strong chemotherapy had left him looking gaunt. He wore a knit cap provided by the unit to cover his now hairless head.
"Get in line, little brother." Harm chuckled weakly and looked at his younger sibling with affection as the younger Rabb held tightly to his brother's hand.
"You did not tell me of your illness. I am your brother. I should know these things." He sounded hurt.
"Ask Mac and Mom. Communication is not my strong point unless I'm in a courtroom." Harm replied sheepishly.
"Your mom is very nice. She calls me her other son." Sergei grinned.
"She's a special lady, and you are special too. Sergei, thank you for the bone marrow." Harm's voice softened as he spoke. His condition left him feeling emotionally labile as his eyes watered with threatening tears.
Sergei patted his brother's hand and smiled. "I have more good news for you. I am going to be a citizen of the United States of America!" He announced proudly.
"When? How?" Harm's face brightened.
"Your mother, the Admiral, Mac, Mr. Webb, Dr. David Owen, and Commander Theresa Coulter all went to my hearing with the immigration board..." Sergei began to relate what happened.
The panel of officials listened as each person spoke in Sergei Zudkov's behalf. David and Terri explained the technicalities of the DNA analysis and the bone marrow match. The board seemed impressed, but continued to point out that there was no evidence to support a direct connection between Sergei and Harmon Rabb Sr. They argued that the match was a fortunate coincidence. The Admiral and Mac used all their legal skills to try to convince them to reconsider. Webb had even presented the paper trail that took Harm to Russia. Without evidence that the senior Rabb had died in Russia, they would not consider the information in their decision. Then Trish Rabb Burnett gave her testimony...
"When my son Harm told me about his brother in Russia, I too was skeptical. I was angry that there was a possibility that my first husband was alive all those years and did not come home to his son and me. I experienced a change of heart when my son's illness threatened to take his life, and the only chance he had for surviving was with Sergei's bone marrow." Trish paused as a wave of emotion almost brought tears.
"My husband in the course of serving his country was shot down in a god forsaken war. He survived imprisonment in a North Vietnamese prison and was taken to Russia where he continued to serve his country by feeding the Russians misinformation about our technical abilities before he escaped. You have classified affidavits from a former Russian air force officer and a Russian agent testifying to those facts." Her tone was angry. Members of the panel shifted uncomfortably as she maintained direct eye contact.
"My husband was then reported to have been killed saving a Russian woman's life...the same woman who claims that she carried his child Sergei." She paused.
"Perhaps it was all an incredible lie that the tragedy of my husband's life could come full circle to save his son's life years later. Suppose Sergei is not really my first husband's child, and my son was fooled by this elaborate scheme. What are the chances that Sergei would be such a close match genetically that he could provide life sustaining bone marrow to my son, Harm Junior?" Trish posed the question to the fully attentive panel.
"I don't call that a coincidence, I call it a miracle. If you chose not to believe in this miracle, then consider Sergei on his own merits. He is a young man who gave a part of himself so an American citizen might live. An American citizen who has committed his life to the service of this country and defense of our constitution. In a time when people are choosing to destroy our way of life, we have a young man who chooses to give life. Why would we not want him to be a citizen? Please explain that to me. I believe that there are many people in this country today who would also like to hear your reasons." Trish passionately implored the panel.
"I can see where Harm gets his courtroom talent." The Admiral whispered to Mac as he smiled in admiration of the woman who so boldly spoke to the immigration board.
"...so it was your mother that convinced the immigration board to reconsider." Sergei finished recounting the scenario to Harm.
"She's quite a lady." Harm smiled.
"She is my American mother. She and Frank want to send me to college, but I do not want to take their money. I want to earn my way." Sergei explained with a touch of pride in his voice.
"I will let the three of you work that out, but let me forewarn you, as you have already seen, your American mother can be very stubborn." Harm chuckled as he imagined the family discussion.
"You must have gotten that trait from her." Sergei grinned.
"And from our father." Harm added with conviction.

A year and a half later...
"Congratulations, Harm and Sarah." David Owen approached the happy couple at their wedding reception. "I have a little wedding present for you." He handed Harm an envelope.
Harm read the contents and gave David a surprised look. "Is this what I think it is?"
"You are officially two for two on miracles my friend." David winked and walked away.
Mac looked at the letter. "What is this Harm?"
"It says that we have a real chance of making a baby the old fashion way...no frozen tadpoles needed." He grinned and wrapped his arms around his wife and kissed her passionately.
"We'll see about old fashion part, Sailor. Remember I'm a Marine, the first on the beach." Mac whispered seductively.
"First in the bed?" Harm raised his eyebrows.
Mac leaned over and kissed him again, "First in the bed, the kitchen table, on the living room floor..."
The end...
"Baby I need your lovin
Got to have all your lovin
Baby I need you lovin..."
