Summary: Although Harm aggressively works to help his brother gain US
citizenship, he fails to provide the needed evidence that Sergei is truly
his father's son. A major life threatening turn of events however creates a
greater need for Sergei to remain in the US.
Mac began to regret her confession. "Harm, I don't expect anything. I just wanted to let you know my feelings."
Harm looked away before responding, "Sarah, don't."
"Don't love you? Do you think I can turn my feelings on and off like a bilge switch?" She used words from a long ago conversation.
"I have cancer." He found the words were no easier to say than before. "My chances of survival are maybe ten percent. I can pretend that I am well and that it won't come back, but it is still always there like my shadow." He had stood up and looked out his window avoiding facing her.
She walked over and took his hand in hers. "I guess that gives you two choices. You can keep your eye on that shadow or on the sun that created it."
He met her gaze and saw a quiet confidence that he had always counted on when he needed reassurance. He slowly let down his guard and touched her cheek. "I guess that's why I've always loved you Sarah. You tell me what I need to hear."
"Well you still owe me a dinner date." Mac changed the subject, realizing that work was not the place for this discussion to go any further.
"You don't want to go to that place Bobbie told me about. She said she had to fold her long legs up like a lawn chair to get under that little table." Harm chuckled.
"I thought it sounded like the kind of food you would like." Mac defended.
"How do you know what I like to eat?"
She gave him a 'get real' look.
"For your information, I am now eating beef two times a week." He boasted.
"Oh, so we can go to Beltway Burger." Mac's eyes sparkled mischievously.
"If I eat beef it is prime cut and well done. I'm eating it for the nutritional value. A Beltway Burger disrespects the cow that gave up its life!" Harm retorted in disgust.
"Am I going to regret asking you out Squid?"
"No ma'am. I'll be nice."
"Now that we got that straight. Why are you asking Singer to be your partner on this investigation?" Mac interrogated.
"You've got to admit she's got the ability to sniff out the dirty little details of a case. After all we beat your little green Marine butt the other day in court." Harm pointed his finger at her chest.
"That was a fluke."
Harm rolled his eyes. "Besides she's been there for me." He sounded more serious.
"Like I wasn't." Mac replied with a twinge of guilt as they walked out of his office.
"Mac, I admit I haven't liked what she's done in the past. But she deserves a chance." Harm began to direct Mac towards the elevators.
"Harm she's trying to appeal to your compassionate side, and you've been vulnerable as of late."
"Mac, I'm not marrying the woman. It's just a working relationship." Harm replied pointedly.
"WE have a working relationship." Mac retorted.
"We have a relationship, AND we work together. There is a difference." Harm argued as they stood waiting for the elevators.
"I'm glad you cleared that up." A gruff voice interrupted the interchange.
"Admiral." Harm and Mac both looked like deer caught in headlights.
"Carry on." The Admiral raised an eyebrow and smirked as he passed them and entered the elevator. The doors closed before the two officers realized what had transpired.
