Disclaimer: Star Trek belongs to Paramount/Viacom and not to me. Sad, but true. I temper with their characters nevertheless. Why? Because I am a hopeless romantic.

And please, don't sue me. I don't have anything you might want. Just check my bank account – it's empty. I don't make any money with this – believe me.

Author's note (1): This story is dedicated to Melena who had to live in a hotel room with me for two weeks on Crete – and didn't kill me for being chaotic, for asking questions constantly while I was writing ("Do you know another word for…." – I really should have brought my Advanced Learner's Dictionary with me – I know… but it was far too heavy!) . Thank you for being my best friend, Mel! *huggles*

And thank you to my loyal beta-readers as well! Nieke, Kerry and Anne – you're the best! Thank you for reading this thing, correcting my mistakes and suggesting titles! *huggles*

Author's note (2): This is my answer (well, sort of an answer) to a challenge posted to JetC20 by Megan an eternity ago (on April 5th):

"They're back on Earth, finally. The Press (bless'em, curse'em) has finally gotten wind of the fact that J & C were stranded together on a planet together for 3 months, long ago. What is the fallout???"

@ -;-- Part 1 --;- @

"Commander Chakotay, we know that you and Captain Janeway spent three months on an alien planet. Is it true that the two of you have been in love ever since?"

He hated press conferences. Ever since Voyager got home they had been rushed from debriefing to debriefing and now they were rushed from one press conference to the next.

After the Dominion War Voyager's return was the best thing that could have happened to the press.

People were no longer interested in reading or watching stories about war heroes or heart-breaking ones about widows and orphans.

Voyager's return could not have been placed better.

Every journalist wanted his story of Voyager's crew. From "The adventures of Neelix – chef, moral officer, ambassador" to "Tom & B'Elanna – a love story" – everything had been covered.

Now they had somehow learned about New Earth.

Chakotay glanced at Kathryn. She was beautiful – as always. She must have felt it for she caught his eyes and smiled a reassuring smile. The cameras caught it - they caught everything.

He knew she could read his mind as easily as he could read hers. They could hold conversations just with their eyes. It had been useful on Voyager when decisions had to be made quickly, when they negotiated with aliens. They never really needed words – they knew each other thoroughly.

No wonder the press thought they were involved.

They had noticed the interaction between them soon after their arrival. There had been some cover stories like "The secret love affair on Voyager". But rumours had calmed down – until now.

New Earth - they had somehow found out.

He smiled - remembering the monkey, bathtubs, angry warriors and - most importantly - Kathryn. Not the Captain - just Kathryn.

He had loved her before New Earth, although he had dismissed his feelings as a crush. He had had a crush on the only woman on board who was impossible to reach – a magnifiscent, stubborn, intelligent, beautiful red-head.

@ -;-- Part 2 --;- @

On New Earth he had discovered why he would wait for her forever – if necessary - she was his soul mate – his one and only true love – the woman he could find true happiness with.

They had never been lovers – they had never made love or even shared a single kiss. But their souls were connected - they were true Imzadi. Although this term did not belong their culture – it was Betazoid - it fitted their relationship best.

He remembered her standing on the bridge after Harry had confirmed that the alien technology could indeed take them into the Alpha Quadrant. She had turned to look at him – tears in her eyes, a truly happy smile on her face. 'We're going home, love' her eyes had said. "Mr. Tuvok open a ship-wide channel," were the words she said aloud.

"This is Kathryn Janeway speaking. We have found a way back to the Alpha Quadrant. We are finally getting home to our loved ones. But we are not there yet. Please brace yourselves for any turbulence that might occur. I want to tell you that it has been an honour to serve with all of you. You are a great crew – the best I have ever served with. And most importantly you have become friends to me – family. We are a family – and always remember – a family always sticks together. Whatever will come we will get through it together."

All the time her eyes had never left his telling Chakotay a story reserved for him.

He knew she loved him. That moment he realised that he had been right to wait for her – that they would be together forever.

Her eyes finally left his.

She sat down in her chair beside him. "Let's do it." His hands found hers as the alien artefact opened a wormhole into the Alpha Quadrant.

Luckily they had suffered no casualties on their rough way home. As soon as they arrived Tuvok announced an incoming hail.

They had not spoken to each other since. Not that they did not want to. They had beamed down to Starfleet Headquarters. The debriefing began immediately. Starfleet carefully made sure that Voyager's senior staff was isolated – even from each other.

Then the press started to attack them. Kathryn had gone into hiding – telling no one where she was. He knew she had stayed at her mother's but the press would have found out if he had visited or even called her. This was the first time he saw her in a long time.

"Commander? Did you understand my question? I asked whether the two of you have been in love ever since your stay on this planet." Chakotay knew this was the right time to confess it to the whole world.

"No."

The room was suddenly quiet.

You could have heard a pin dropping.

Kathryn stared at him wide-eyed.

"I can only speak for myself. I have not been in love with Captain Janeway since New Earth."

He paused to look right into her eyes.

"I have been in love with her since the very beginning of our journey. But to make one thing clear – we have never been involved – we have never shared a single kiss. Protocol prevented it. I was hoping to spend the rest of my life with her once we got home – but you screw it by making her hide from you – from me. Maybe you have your story now – maybe not. I don't really care. Nevertheless, I want you to leave us alone from now on – give us some rest. I think Voyager's crew deserves it."

He went out of the room towards the nearest transporter platform. Kathryn followed him silently.

She ordered the officer on duty out and inserted the co-ordinates herself, making sure they would be deleted from the transporter logs once the beam-out was completed.

Chakotay stepped onto the platform, feeling the familiar tingle soon after Kathryn had joined him.
